Ask what you will do before choosing a month
Museums, swimming, mountain walks and outdoor cafés require different conditions. Choose your main activity, then what would make the trip disappointing: prolonged rain, uncomfortable heat, no swimming or closed attractions. Two travellers can reasonably choose different seasons for the same place. Off-season is not a sufficient reason on its own.
Use climate information without treating it as a forecast
Monthly averages describe a period, not your particular week. Look at day and night temperatures, rainfall and daylight rather than a single sunshine icon. Consult the country’s weather service and information for the exact region. Shortly before departure, switch to forecasts and adapt your plans instead of insisting on an itinerary fixed months earlier.

Compare several weeks, not just two seasons
Compare three date windows with the same duration and accommodation standard. Note transport, nights, local journeys and planned activities. Check school holidays, public holidays and major local events: a neighbouring week can be very different. Do not assume Tuesday departures always cost less or that last-minute bookings necessarily bring discounts. Compare the actual offers when booking.
Check the services that make the trip worthwhile
A cheaper night loses its appeal if the restaurant, shuttle or activity you need is closed. On an island, check transport connections; in a resort, operating lifts or routes; at a campsite, available facilities. Ask for exact opening dates. A homepage showing a pool in July says nothing about whether it opens in April.
Plan a useful alternative without doubling the budget
For a short trip, identify two backup activities near your accommodation. Check cost and booking requirements rather than merely writing museum if it rains. If the main activity depends entirely on conditions, value flexible bookings more highly. The best season is not the one called perfect: it is one where the stay remains worthwhile when weather or plans change.
How we work
We verify information, cite sources where relevant and date our updates. Prices, availability and rules that may change should always be checked again with the relevant source or service.
