Measure door-to-door time
Do not look only at kilometres. A property 6 km away on one direct line can be easier than one 3 km away requiring two changes.
Calculate transport for the whole stay
Add tickets, passes, airport transfer and possible late-night journeys. Multiply by travellers where each person needs a fare.

Check the last service
A cheap neighbourhood becomes much less attractive when dinner or an event regularly forces you into a taxi home.
Choose a connected secondary neighbourhood over isolated outskirts
One or two stops beyond the most expensive centre can be a better compromise than staying far away. The aim is to leave the premium zone without leaving the useful network.
Count what the neighbourhood saves elsewhere
Supermarkets, bakeries, simple food and walking access to a station can reduce other parts of the budget.
Our rule
We would happily accept 10–20 extra minutes for a meaningful saving, but much less readily a difficult interchange, early last train or dependence on taxis.
How we work
We verify information, cite sources where relevant and date our updates. Prices, availability and rules that may change should always be checked again with the relevant source or service.
