Cap transport first
On an all-in €300 budget, transport consuming €180 already removes much of your flexibility. Set a ceiling suited to the number of nights before choosing the destination.
Calculate accommodation by total price
Taxes, fees, payment terms and actual night count matter. Compare the total reservation price for the same dates and conditions.

Keep food flexible
Instead of inventing a universal daily budget, separate one meal you genuinely want from functional meals. Bakeries, markets or shared kitchens can reduce spend without making the trip feel deprived.
Local transport: do not pay twice for a bad location
A cheaper room far from the centre can add shuttles, metro fares and lost time. Add local travel cost to the accommodation decision.
Keep an unallocated reserve
On €300, leaving €30–50 unassigned can absorb a pricier transfer, luggage storage, unexpected meal or minor change.
An example that actually adds up to €300
Take an illustrative budget, not a price promise: €90 return transport, €110 for two nights, €65 for food and local travel, and €35 kept aside. Total: €300. If the transport you find costs €150 instead, another €60 must come from somewhere. Before removing the reserve, try different dates, a nearer destination or one fewer night. The calculation makes you choose what to reduce rather than discovering the overspend after arrival.
