The clothing formula

Wear your trousers, shoes and bulkiest layer. Pack three tops, five underwear sets, five pairs of socks, one light spare bottom and compact sleepwear.

One pair of shoes changes everything

A second pair is often the item that breaks the plan. If one comfortable pair covers walking, restaurants and travel, wear it throughout.

Washing one item can be more rational than carrying five duplicates

On a five-day trip, washing a top or underwear takes little time and can save several litres, especially inside 40 × 30 × 20.

A laptop is the real tipping point

Laptop, charger and padding consume more space than an extra day of clothing. If you work while travelling, build the bag around the tech.

Keep spare room

A bag that only closes when compressed aggressively is badly calibrated. Leave enough room to access liquids, remove a layer and avoid bulging beyond the sizer.

Our conclusion

Five days are realistic for a light city trip, mild weather and one pair of shoes. Winter, sport, large laptops or specialist clothing can justify a bigger bag.
