Add the flight and the night it creates
If flying forces you to pay for a hotel before or after the flight, a night train can become competitive even with a higher ticket price.
A couchette is transport plus a bed, not a hotel room
Comfort differs: shared space, noise, train movement and facilities. Financial savings may not compensate for a poor night if you are a very light sleeper.

City-centre arrival changes the maths
Arriving directly at a station may remove airport transfer, waiting and part of local transport. Add those costs to both scenarios.
Awake time can be lower
A ten-hour journey with eight hours asleep may consume less useful time than a two-hour flight surrounded by transfers and waiting.
Price your sleep honestly
If you know you barely sleep in transport, compare a real room plus daytime train/flight. A cheaper ticket can cost a day of fatigue.
Our rule
Night trains are particularly compelling when they genuinely replace a hotel night, link two city centres and arrive at a useful time.
How we work
We verify information, cite sources where relevant and date our updates. Prices, availability and rules that may change should always be checked again with the relevant source or service.
